It's Been Too Long

We know...we've been MIA for a while now...and we apologize. Besides being hip deep in projects and making it through the end of 2010, we also moved part of our studio to the West Coast - San Francisco, to be exact. Now, we are back in full swing and are excited about what is in store. Expect to see new pieces soon in our Etsy shop. Until then, here are a few teaser pics of some captains chairs and chandeliers:

Gray & yellow Momentum upholstery makes these captain chairs shine.

Tomato red and fuchsia...so fantastic. How can you pick just one?

Midnight Gardeners

One evening after working late in the Sideways Shop, we fell into a deep sleep and shared the most amazing dream. We dreamed we were strolling along a moonlit path on a warm summer’s evening when we discovered a secret garden hidden behind a labyrinth of hedges. In our dream, we maneuvered beneath the canopy of lush trees and through the maze until we found the hidden treasure within. There, in the center of the maze and bathed in moonlight, were four midnight gardeners reverently awaiting the opening of each night bloom. These four sisters enchanted us with the beauty of their dark skin against the luminescent foliage. They were truly bewitching; and one glance was all that it took for us to become spellbound. Upon waking, we became possessed by our shared vision and knew we HAD to recreate the garden sprites of our dream. This obsession led us to the four perfect chairs with sweet little flowers carved into their wood frames, which we painted the same bewitching black of our dream. The rich ebony has a slight sheen as if bathed in moonlight...shimmering with the slightest flicker of light. With the seats upholstered in the perfect midnight garden fabric, the seductive sisters of our dream have been brought to life. These four sister chairs carry their midnight enchantment with them wherever they go. Now that you have seen them, do you find it impossible to resist the allure of having your very own midnight garden? They probably already have you in their spell.

If you are under their spell and you MUST HAVE these Midnight Gardeners, please follow the link to our Etsy shop! SOLD!

Wonder Twins

It is easy to become accustomed to getting overlooked when growing up in a “fly-over” state. People are in a hurry. They rush past without taking so much as a second glance. Far too often something extraordinary is left behind because it just doesn’t immediately catch someone’s attention. Being overlooked in this way can also create great resolve. These formerly ordinary-looking twins knew what being ignored felt like and were determined to get noticed. While scheming and dreaming of their future extraordinary life, they decided invisibility was NOT going to be one of their super powers. Joining together, they were able to transform themselves into a pair of eye-catching wonders. They chose a truly special Maharam fabric for their super suits because of its outstanding ability to resist stains. And what fortune!...it came in the perfect color to set off their rich, mink-colored, freshly-painted frames. These wonder twin chairs have turned into quite the head-turners. They are now standouts in any crowd. Second, third, and even fourth glances are common occurrences. These strikingly handsome chairs are anxious to share their standout design with you. Activate their wonder twin powers and bring them home today!

Girls on Wheels!

These two may look like sweet little vintage chairs, but if you look closer you can see they definitely have an adventurous side. Just check out the intense orange woodgrain fabric by Joel Dewberry. If these two were people, they would be roller derby queens with names like Orange Crush and Shasta Fierce. They would stretch a pair of fishnets over those shiny chrome legs and install a banked track in your living room. Beware! Purchasing these roller girls may lead to other daring design choices. Or perhaps you’ve already taken a spin around that rink, and their raucous style will blend effortlessly with your décor. Either way, you may come home to find that these two jammers have rocketed around your table and knocked out their competition. Edgy little chairs like these, with their bold, in-your-face attitude, are more than capable of revving up your home…and you can be certain that they will score points with your guests. SOLD!

Say Hello to Jahn

Some people just have it. It is difficult to describe, but you definitely know it when you see it. Maybe it is a certain style, or a confidence that defies explanation. Our latest chair, Jahn, is like one of those people. I mean just look at him. He is wickedly cool. He has definitely got it. He probably sat in on many backroom deals as they were closed with handshakes and highballs... then chased with a Bromo fizz the next morning! Jahn is a cosmopolitan chair with an "it factor" that cannot be denied. Gore Vidal is credited with saying, "style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn." If you know who you are, and what you want to say, Jahn can help you make that statement. He has it, and he'll bring it to you, while making your place the swingingest thing since Benny Goodman! SOLD!

Autumn Joy!

“Happiness is excitement that has found a settling down place, but there is always a little corner that keeps flapping around.” ~ E.L. Konigsburg

We’ve been told that year after year, in study after study, the Danes are consistently among the happiest people on earth. Surely being surrounded by exceptionally awesome design has something to do with their joyful attitudes. These two charming little chairs are testaments to the seriously cool style of the Danes. Even though they were hidden deep within the recesses of a dark basement when we first saw them, we immediately knew they had great potential. We imagined them blissfully playing in piles of beautiful autumn leaves, and knew that our upcycled canvas banners would be the perfect fabric for them. Take one of these chairs home today, and give the excitement a settling down place. Their bright new fabric and ridiculously cool Danish style will add a little corner of happiness to any room in your home. SOLD!

Émile

Most chairs come to fruition with a solid idea, a stereotype if you will. French Bergère chairs usually have fancy clothes, and expect to live a lavish lifestyle. They don attire fit for a French country estate and don’t often stray from this concept. Bergères LOVE the elegance of living in a chateau…always en granite tenue. Émile loved the French countryside; but he was not satisfied with the status quo. He was conflicted. Though he felt like a nobleman inside, the froufrou fabric that covered his frame was uncomfortable and confining. Émile wanted to travel the world. When this wanderer arrived at our door, he expressed to us that he was trying to “find himself.” He was tired, and his fine clothes were a little worn, but his genteel lineage was still apparent. We told him of our favorite quote from George Bernard Shaw: “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” This became his battle cry, and his gaudy fabric was ripped off faster than a “Nigerian prince” can accept a fund transfer. Although Émile has a new rugged exterior, he’s just a big softy inside. Now that he has been recreated, he is ready to settle down with a new family… and some incredibly strong coffee. SOLD!

Lucille (aka Lovely Lucy)

Tom Jones may have said it best when he sang, “she’s all you’d ever want, she’s the kind I like to flaunt and take to dinner…she’s a lady, oh, whoa, whoa, she’s a lady,” and this lady has a spunky new attitude! This once ugly duckling has turned into quite a swan. Her drab, schoolmarm attire just didn’t come close to matching the sassy sophisticate inside. Believe me when I tell you she is no wallflower. This gal is yearning to kick up her heels and quickstep across your living room floor. So, go ahead. Take her home, and finish the song… “talkin’ about that little lady, and the lady is mine.”

If you are interested in purchasing Lucy, please visit our Etsy shop by clicking on the link below or in the side panel. For more photos of Lucy please visit us on flickr.

Two Ladies From Boca

These two sisters spent their whole lives in Boca Raton. They spent endless hours fundraising for the Boca Junior League, selling cookbooks and being doting wives while their husbands enjoyed long days at the club. And let’s face it; they also spent more than their share of time at the beach. In fact, the sun had begun to take its toll and their deadbeat husbands were the first to notice. After receiving their substantial divorce settlements, these young women decided to pamper themselves for a change. They went to the preeminent cosmetic surgeons in the country, spent time at the best spas, found an outstanding personal trainer and now they are back on the market. In fact, Midge has already snared a fine young thing that swept her off her feet. Madge is still enjoying all the new found attention, but understand this fellas, a sexy divorcee like her won’t be around for long. Her social calendar fills up faster than a Grizzly bear at a salmon buffet. Better step up your game boys (or ladies – Madge doesn’t discriminate), and snatch this doll up while you still can. SOLD!

Frank and Zooey

Most of the other Gunlocke chairs were quite content with their 9 to 5 lives. Attending meetings in crowded smoked-filled conference rooms discussing wheat and corn, and coexisting with the noise of hundreds of telephones and typewriters at the Department of Agriculture was their way of life. Most of them pounded the clock each day and waited for the coveted 20 year watch, looking forward to retiring to an overstuffed storeroom someday. Most were content, but not all. Not Frank and Zooey. Frank and Zooey couldn't wait to shed their drab, government issued uniforms and strike out on their own. They knew there was more to this world than the inside of an office building and they were determined to have it all. One night, after hours, they made their escape, throwing off the vestiges of their old life along the way. Now, reinvented and invigorated they are ready to start their second life. SOLD!
